The recent outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus in China has the world on edge and is affecting many industries. According to the AFC, the decision “is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety” of all participating players and teams”. Furthermore, the decision was made in conjunction with the competing teams in each group because of the coronavirus in China.
The change in fixtures will affect South Korea because some of the matches will now be held in Korean venues. According to sports betting forums, FC Seoul Seoul will now play Beijing FC at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
In addition, Ulsan Hyundai FC will now play Shanghai Shenhua at home on February 18, 2020. Other teams that will change venues are the Suwon Samsung Bluewings and Guangzhou Evergrande. They will play each other on February 12 in Suwon, 45 kilometers south of Seoul, instead of Guangzhou. Furthermore, the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will now host Shanghai SIPG on February 19, 2020.
While this is taking place, the AFC said that they will closely monitor the situation with the coronavirus. Thus, they will be able to make further decision about home games for the Chinese Teams in March. In addition, they will do their best to further disrupt any future matches in the AFC Championship tournament.
