2 KBO Pitchers Going on Trial for Assault on “Special Violence” ChargesOriginally, the incident came to the attention of the media in February of 2021. This is when an ex-teammate from the Sunrin Internet High School in Seoul said they were both bullies. According to the allegations, Lee and Kim beat younger teammates so badly that it was normal for them to not be able to play.

Initially, both players denied the allegations. Kim thru his lawyer said that the claims are untrue. On the other hand, Lee said that the high school baseball team took discipline seriously and had strict standards. Furthermore, he said that he may have taken that discipline too far on occasion. However, he said no one was a specific target and that all disciplinary matters were for the entire team.

When the accusations were first made, representatives of the Bears, Twins and the KBO, met with the accuser several times. However, according to baseball betting websites, no punishment was given to the players. This is because the representatives said was too much disparity between their accounts and that of the accuser.

Afterwards, the former teammate took the matter to the state-run Sports Ethics Center. They in turn, had the police investigate those assault claims.

According to baseball forums, both KBO pitchers will be going on Trial for Assault on Special Vilence charges. Special violence is a charge that falls under Article 261 of Korea’s criminal code. It covers a crime made “through the threat of collective force or by carrying a dangerous weapon”. If found guilty, the pair could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.

Lee Young-ha will be on trial at the Seoul Western District Court. On the other hand, Kim Dae-hyun, who is serving in the military, will be on trial at the Military Court.
