The District Council had tough questions about how the Lottery runs the DC sports betting operation. Some council members feel the operator had shortcomings, mainly its revenue generation.
GamBet had a monopoly in mobile sports betting in DC. However, it only accounts for a small portion of wagers in the District. According to online gambling south Korea reports, the DC sports betting operation has faced several challenges since its launch in 2020.
The challenges delayed the launch of retail operations. Also, the Lottery failed to attract an active player base for the GamBet mobile app. Mobile betting is the primary source of revenue in most states. However, the GamBet app suffered from several issues.
DC Sports Betting Operation Review
Some players said that they had issues with GamBet’s geolocation. Others noted that the app didn’t work for iPhone users during the previous Super Bowl between the Bengals and Rams. However, DC Lottery acknowledged its difficult start. Nevertheless, they insisted that they made improvements to the app.
Although DC Lottery said they have better betting odds, players still prefer other sportsbooks. The Lottery also said they had already paid off most of the expenses for starting the sportsbook operation.
DC Lottery initially estimated a $1.5 million revenue. However, it is expecting around $2.1 million this year. The early tax revenue estimates were optimistic but didn’t account for the issues. For example, some council members asked whether or not removing GamBet’s monopoly could make the market more competitive.
The Lottery said no. However, industry experts said that competition would improve sports betting odds and other services in DC.
