Bermuda Casino Resorts Unlikely to Be Part of Amended Legislation

Despite the apparent demise of the resort-based concept, the Bermuda casino project continues to go forward.

Key components of the long-running gaming plan, such as the requirement that casinos be tied to resort properties, have been revised in legislation passed by territory authorities at the end of last week.

Bermuda’s premier, David Burt, has called the integrated resort concept, which has been discussed for years, a “flaw” in the previous statute regulating the island’s gambling business. According to news reports from Monday, Burt indicated that the new law “relaxes” the resort-based paradigm.

Confidence in Bermuda’s Casinos Is Low

The new law does not elaborate on the process of casino licensing or development.

Burt, who was also Bermuda’s tourism minister up until last week, claimed that his dual roles created a “possible conflict of interest” that slowed down the project even more. Burt moved fellow politician and ex-tourism minister Zane DeSilva into the position.

Since Burt serves as premier, tourist minister, and finance minister in addition to his other responsibilities, certain MPs on Bermuda and a local bank have been vocal opponents of the initial legislation introduced this year.
