In the latest in Baseball news, there is another great opportunity for baseball players in Korea, as the try outs for the new team for the Australian Baseball League (ABL) are now ongoing. This is a great opportunity for professional players who were undrafted, as well as those who have just finished high school. The club has yet to be named, but they will be based in Geelong. Geelong is 75 kilometers southwest of Melbourne in Australia. Winter Ball Korea, the sports management company who is in charge of the club, will hold a three-day tryout schedule. They tryouts will be in the Team Up Campus in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province south of Seoul.
Throughout the tryouts, some familiar colors were seen in the field, with players who used to be part of KBO teams like the LG Twins, SK Wyverns and Samsung Lions were in attendance as they try out for the opportunity to play professional baseball in Australia. South Korean Baseball Team in Down Under
The Australian Baseball League currently has teams from Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. Two non-Australian teams will be part of this league: South Korea and New Zealand. The 8-team league will open in November, and the championship series sometime in February next year.
Aside from fresh graduates to turn pro, former KBO players and South Koreans who play in the US minor leagues are also eligible to join the club. Kim Kyeong-eon, who was formerly from the Hanwha Eagles, is one of the first professional players to join the club. Koo Dae-sung, the former MVP pitcher in the KBO is inaugural manager. Koo was also a product of the Hanwha Eagles, and then played for the Blue Sox in the ABL. Park Choong-sik, a KBO alumni, will serve as the general manager of the new team.
