With Texas Hold’em, the dealer has a 52 card deck that will be shuffled and deals two cards each. The turn of players (there are multiple players in a game) will be done clock-wise. As each player has 2 cards each, they will aim to get the best combination out of 5 cards. The two players to the left of the dealer will be the big and small blind. This will start the round for betting. This is followed by the pre-flop. The pre-flop is when players bet on the initial two cards they have. Once everyone has bet, they proceed to the Flop. This is when players bet on each card that the dealer lays down until one winner emerges.
Poker Tutorial: Other Formats
Omaha Poker is another type of poker, where players get 4 cards each. However, players must use two cards in their hole, plus three community cards. Winners are the players who will get the best high, and the best low hand. Low hand is having 5 different cards with a rank of 8 and below.
Third is the Seven-card Stud, which does not have a flop. It also does not have community cards. The game starts with two cards facedown, with the third card face up. The round continues until the players get 7 cards each – 3 will be face down and 4 will be facing up. From there you pick your best 5-card combination for the win.
There is also the 2-7 Triple Draw, which is more advanced than the others. The goal for this game is to get the lowest possible 5-card hand combination. We will tackle this with more details and tips in future tutorials, of course. Lastly, the newest poker format is the Chinese Poker. This is where you play open cards and take turns to get the best hand from the deck. Then players will end up with 13 cards each and try to form 3 sets of combinations: 1 with 3 cards, and the other 2 with 5 cards each.
